英国著名汉学家霍克斯（David Hawkes）教授于2009年7月31日在牛津逝世。

霍克斯教授生于1923年7月6日，1945-1947在牛津大学学习汉语，1948-1951北京大学研究生，研究中国古典文学，1959-1971任牛津大学汉学教授，1973-1978任牛津大学研究员。

霍克斯一生翻译了大量中国古典文学作品，主要译作包括：

《红楼梦》（前三卷，80回）（The Story of the Stone，1973-1980）

《楚辞》（The Songs of the South,1959,修订版1985）

《杜甫入门》（A Little Primer of Tu Fu, 散文体详注本，1967）

《刘毅传书》（Liu Yi and the Dragon Princess,2001）

主要学术著作包括：

The Story of the Stone: a Translator’s Notebooks（2000）
