The 19thChinese-English Translation Seminar and the 15thChinese-French Translation Seminar, hosted by the International Communications Translation Committee of TAC and organized by China Radio International (CRI), were held in late December2009 in Beijing. Over 40 senior translators took part in each seminar.
In the Chinese-English Translation Seminar, translators discussed the English translation for some key phrases in speeches by state leaders, such as the speeches by President Hu Jintao at the United Nations Climate Change Summit and the G20 financial summit, as well as some new popular words, e.g., "Shan Zhai (山寨)" and "Qian Gui Ze (潜规则)".
The Chinese-French Translation Seminar discussed the French translation for over 100 Chinese phrases concerning current affairs and politics. To ensure the quality of the discussions, the CRI invited three native French speakers to attend the seminar and answer questions on-site.
The International Communications Translation Committee of TAC was founded in 1991 and has established translation consultancy mechanism for three language combinations, i.e., Chinese to English, Chinese to French and Chinese to Japanese. The Committee holds regular discussions on the translation of newly emerged terms and concepts in the political, cultural and economic life in China into foreign languages, recommend versions of translation, and duly publish them for the public to refer to.
