English publications on China will focus on four key subjects: Confucius comes top

Confucius, Shanghai, wild animals and environmental protection, as well as modern Chinese arts will become the favorite topics for English books on China in 2010, according to a reporter from China Daily.

Confucius

Foreign Language Press (FLP) will publish two books on Confucius. One is Confucius, written by Kong Xianglin, a 75th generation descendant of Confucius and vice president of the Research Institute of Confucianism. This book will present a featured chapter on the influence of the Confucius thought on the philosophical traditions of Europe and the United States. The other, Getting to Know Confucius: a new translation of the Analects, is a bilingual one with detailed notes. The book was translated by Lin Wusun, former Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China (TAC), who is  famous for his translation of The Art of War by Sun Tze and Sun Bin.

Besides this, Pan Macmillan will publish Confucius from the Heart (paperback) by Yu Dan; Compendium Books and Shandong Publishing Group will jointly publish The Way of Confucius by Jonathan Price.

Shanghai

With the pending EXPO2010 in Shanghai, Penguin will launch Shanghai: A History in Photographs this April. Two well-known photographers, Liu Heung Shing and Karen Smith, will look back on the ups and downs of Shanghai since 1842. The FLP will publish a pictorial by the photographer John Burris, who in 2008 presented a well-received pictorial entitled Beijing Days.

Wild animals and environmental protection

Living Fossils: the Pandas of China West, co-authored by Zhang Zhihe and Sarah Bexell, will be published by Penguin; and Moon Bear will be published jointly by Macmillan Press and Animals Asia Foundation.

Modern Chinese arts

In promoting the modern Chinese arts for overseas readers, the FLP stands out of the crowd with two heavyweights: The 798 Art Zone and Chinese Contemporary Art and At Work, a book featuring interviews with 25 well-known Chinese modern artists.
