The Changing Global Economy and the Language Industry in China
—China Language Industry Conference 2010
ChinaLanguage Industry Conference 2010 defines itself as a brand new platform for authoritative, high profile and international exchanges of the language industry both in and outside China, following two China International Forum on the Translation Industry organized by the Translators Association of China. The conference will for the first time formalize the concept of “language industry” and convey the idea that economic globalization and the thriving information industry have generated an emerging industry inclusive of translation and localization services, language technology, as well as T&I education and training. The language industry bridges international communications and exchanges and is vital to business globalization. Concerns over the development of the language industry thus translate into concerns about the image of governments and corporations in the international community, and about the quality and effectiveness of globalization.
The conference will assemble service providers of translation and localization, governmental and corporate customers, providers of language technology and tools and educational institutions alike, to engage in discussions on best practices, standards, and trends of the language industry. The theme of the conference, “the Changing Global Economy and the Language Industry in China”, focuses on the interdependency of the language industry and the various industries it serves. Highlights of the conference include:
1. Release of China Language Industry Report 2010. The report, to be released by the Translators Association of China, will reveal for the first time some authoritative statistics of the language industry in China.
2. Dialogue between Language service providers and clients. Corporate customers will talk face-to-face with language service providers about language service needs, client-LSP relationship, quality concerns and more, a productive dialogue that forms part of business globalization strategies.
3. Discussion on standards of translation and localization services. TAC’s Translation Service Committee and Localization Services Committee have been quite active in drawing up standards and they will report latest progress and future plans.
4. Forum on Language service for major international events. As a platform for information sharing and cooperation, officials from organizing committees of Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo, as well as language service providers, will be invited to share their experiences in organizing language services to facilitate such international events. Both pending and potential organizers and language service providers of China’s ever growing international events will benefit from the enlightening sharing. .
5. Introduction to TAC’s Training and Certification Scheme for CAT Tools. Translators Association of China is working with industry experts to launch a training and certification scheme for CAT tools and details will be explained.
6. Awarding of Top Ten Corporate Members of the Language Industry 2010. During the conference, ten corporate members of the language industry in the year 2010 will be awarded. This will be the second time for TAC to award and appreciate its corporate members since 2009.
In addition to discussions, dialogues and Q&A sessions, the conference will organize networking events such as receptions and salons to maximize opportunities for participants to communicate.
